According to figures released last week by the City’s Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities, volunteers raised $3,770 under the City’s Adopt-a-Park program by maintaining six Del Ray parks. This money will be invested in neighborhood park improvements.Volunteers earn money for the parks by picking up trash and helping to maintain the parks, which the City regularly inspects. The cleaner the park, the higher the score and the more money earned.
Here is what was earned at individual parks this year:
- Simpson Park playground/gardens, $780
- Commonwealth Ave. medians (Mason to Mount Vernon avenues), $950
- East Del Ray Avenue pocket park, $465
- East Mason Avenue Park, $275
- St. Asaph Park, $470
- W&OD Trail (Mount Jefferson Greenway), $830
Thank you to our dedicated volunteers and especially Adopt-a-Park coordinators Jim
Snyder, Cindy Clemmer and Jim Fitzgerald for their work and dedication. But more volunteers are needed for the cleanup season that runs from April to November. If you would like to join the neighborhood green team and help pick up trash and participate in occasional cleanup efforts, such as mulching and watering new plants and trees, please contact the DRCA.
