Traffic Calming Committee

The DRCA Traffic Calming committee works to make Del Ray a safer place for citizens to walk and ride, including representing our members in city requests regarding traffic and parking issues.

The committee was re-formed in 2023 after DRCA members responding to our membership survey highlighted pedestrian and cyclist safety as a top neighborhood concern.

The committee typically meets on the third Wednesday of the month via Zoom. Send an email to [email protected] to get involved.

Traffic Calming Resources

Northern Virginia Families for Safe Streets maintains a Near Miss and Dangerous Locations database. If you have a close call in the neighborhood, enter it here to ensure it is tracked and can be reported on for advocacy efforts and city planning. https://novasafestreets.org/near-miss-and-dangerous-intersection-survey/

Alexandria 311 – City staff refer to 311 data in planning and prioritization efforts. Requests like adding stop signs, fixing sidewalk obstructions, and adding bike and scooter parking areas or traffic bollards are all appropriate, or you can send a note to all of council asking for their support in Traffic Calming measures. https://alex311.alexandriava.gov/

Alexandria Daylighting Laws – Many city residents are not aware that Section 10-4-41 of the Alexandria City Code prohibits parking within 20 feet from the intersection of curb lines at every intersection citywide. This means that the last 20 feet of every block in Del Ray is a no parking zone (even if there’s no sign or paint!) Parking in these areas makes our intersections less visible and our neighbors less safe. You can read more about this law – and see exactly how the 20 feet is measured on the city’s Parking website: https://www.alexandriava.gov/parking/parking-restrictions-and-districts-overview
