For residents who do not currently have a street tree planted in front of their house (in the grassy area between the sidewalk and the curb), the city will plant a tree at no charge, according to City Arborist John Noelle.
Noelle with consult with residents on the most appropriate tree to be planted. Larger shade trees are preferred (in an effort to restore Del Ray’s declining tree canopy), but only small trees or ornamentals such as cherries are possible in areas where the planting area is small or there are overhead utility lines.
