Each year in February the Del Ray Citizens Association hosts our annual Chili Cook Off. The event is open to residents of Del Ray and cash awards are given for best Chili in a variety of categories. The Cook Off is also used as a fundraising event for community projects.
The fourth annual Del Ray Chili Cook Off on Feb. 25 saw a record crowd taste 13 different chili entries and finish off most of the beer donated by Port City Brewing.
The event raised $2,050 for the Del Ray Gateway Project, which aims to create a beautiful and vibrant entrance to our community that includes the Nancy Dunning Memorial Garden and a proposed splash park at the site of the closed Colasanto pool.
The triangular piece of land at the intersection of Mt. Vernon and Commonwealth had been underutilized and remains and eyesore and dead space, says Nancy Lee-Reeve, an association member and the driving force behind the project.
The winners were Sue Kovalsky and Micki McNaughton in the meat chili category; Patty Moran in the vegetarian category and Patty Moran again in the People Choice category. The winners generously donated their $250 awards to the Gateway Project.
Thank you to Police Chief Michael Brown, Fire Chief Larry Schultz and Sheriff Dana Lawhorne for judging and former President Jay Nestlerode for leading the event.
